Last night we celebrated the 75th anniversary of Pekin Memorial Stadium, home of the Pekin Dragons! Fifty-five years after the inception of Pekin football, there was a need for a new location for some of the high school’s sporting events. After playing in various locations including James Field, there was a need for additional seating for the large crowds attending Pekin High’s games. As World War II came to a close, serious planning began to take place to find a new space. Knowing that James Field’s location was not feasible, The Board of Education investigated the possibility of purchasing the land lying between the Pekin Country Club and Mineral Springs Park. With the help of the Boys’ Athletic Foundation, the school board purchased the fifteen acres for $25,000 on June 19, 1946. The citizens of Pekin approved, that December, the bond issue presented to the community with a resounding “yes” vote. This allowed for the construction of the Memorial Athletic Field complete with football stadium, track and baseball field. Bonds were issued in the amount of $235,000 for the completion of Pekin’s Memorial Stadium. The stadium was originally dedicated on September 10, 1948 when Pekin played Mooseheart in the first game held in front of 12,500 people. Since its establishment, the stadium, in the center of Pekin, has served as an event hub for athletics as well as other community events. In addition to being home to the Dragon athletes in football, baseball, tennis, and track; soccer, JFL and American Legion Baseball have been played here. It has seen Easter Sunrise Services, many years of 4th of July fireworks, and been home to Pekin High’s graduation ceremonies since 1950. It even played concert host to KISS, Ted Nugent, and REO Speedwagon in August, 1975 for a cool ticket price of $6.50. In 1998, as the Stadium entered its 50-year anniversary, it underwent improvements to the sound system, the scoreboard, the concession areas and was celebrated with a rededication complete with the erection of the Veteran’s Memorial at the southwest corner of the Stadium that stands today complete with the flag pole originally from West Campus. Several other updates have helped to preserve this amazing facility. In addition to locker room renovations in 2013, waterproofing of the facility took place in 2015/16, with the press box and lights being replaced in 2020. The tennis courts have undergone resurfacing over the years and both the tennis courts and track will be resurfaced during the summer of 2024. Not to be left out, the baseball field received an upgrade in the summer of 2023, complete with new irrigation, new scoreboard, lights, and a curved, level outfield! We celebrate a facility that is truly home to our Pekin Dragons and continues to be a place of honor in our community. Just as the memorial states, “This stadium is dedicated to the loyal sons and daughters of Pekin. Their sacrifices have fueled the fires of patriotism and the spirit of democracy. They shed their blood in defense of the glorious nation so that we could enjoy its freedom. This stadium stands as an everlasting tribute to all who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Their memory will forever be etched in our hearts.”
