The Process

Your drug prevention team will encourage teens to make intelligent decisions regarding drug use.   In order to complete this mission, your team needs to complete the following:

       1.   gather informational facts

       2.  develop an anti-drug slogan

       3.  create a drug prevention advertisement

Roles and the required information for each

Medical Doctor- researches the classification of the assigned drug and a list of other drugs within the classification, how the drug is ingested (inhaled, smoked, etc.), short and long-term physical effects on the body, and physical dependency

Psychiatrist- researches the reasons for teen use of drug, short and long-term psychological effects of the drug, psychological dependency, and drug rehabilitation for use with the assigned drug

Historian/Statistician-researches origin of drug (where it came from/how long has it been in use, etc.) and different statistics relating to use in teen age group, deaths related to drugs, emergency room visits from drug, etc.

*Each member works together to design an "eye-catching" anti-drug advertisement.

The drug prevention team will complete the tasks using the following steps:

Day 1

***Sit with your group members.  You will keep the same computer throughout the week.

       1.  Each student will be assigned to a 3-member team.  Evaluation will be   based each individuals project.

       2.  The team will be assigned a drug to research for the anti-drug               advertisement.

       3.  Each student will choose a role to complete.  Meet with your group to   begin discussing advertisement slogans and the jobs for role.  Your ad               slogan needs to be an original !!  This is the time to get organized!!               Attendance is very important during this project !!

*Your team is required to "OK" your team advertising slogan with your teacher!!

        4.  Start researching the drug using the Internet sights listed at the end of this webquest.  You are required to use at least 4 different websites              however, you may use more.  Your book may also be used in addition to           the websites.

****As you are researching information, use the "copy and paste" method to save time.  First, highlight and copy the information that you want to use, then open the "Word" program to "paste" the information.  Don't forget to cite sources for the information found.  Remember that information that is used "word-for-word" is put into quotes.  Information that is paraphased doesn't require quotations.   Your last page of the presentation should be for sources.   Here are samples of how to list sources:

internet sources should be listed as:

Retrieved December 6, 2002 from the World Wide Web:  http://www.isbe.il.us

Books are listed as:

Merki, M., & Merki, D. (1999). Health. New York:  Glencoe/McGraw-Hill

Day 2

The first 20 minutes of class will used for a short "refresher" course for using PowerPoint.  After Mrs. Chambers is finished with her presentation, then continue with your research.

Day 3, 4 and 5

        1. Design your PowerPoint advertisement lay-out.  You may use pictures,   clip-art, or other internet symbols from the internet sites listed.

        2. Organize your information on the slides.   Your advertisement needs an introduction and conclusion along with your actual body of the               presentation. Your sources will be listed on the last page with each               members' name and role.

        3. Fine-tune your advertisement to ensure it has a smooth flow and a        powerful anti-drug message.
