Dragon Spotlight tickets are now on sale!  They are $6 and you can buy them at the BFO.  Tickets will be sold until the day of the show, or until they run out!  Dragon Spotlight is on Thursday, Feb. 23rd at 7 PM.  You don’t want to miss it!

Attention all students it is your turn to get involved with Dragon Pride 2012.  Dragon Pride is a school sponsored event that displays all the great things that you do in your classroom.  We are in need of your help!  The Dragon Pride committee is sponsoring a t-shirt design contest!  This t-shirt will be worn by nearly 600 Dragon Pride participants.  How cool would it be for your design to be chosen for this year’s t-shirt.  Pick up an entry form at the Principal’s office or see an Art teacher for the details.  The deadline is Feb. 24th at 3:00 and all rules MUST be followed!

Attention sophomores and juniors: If you are interested in going into the Healthcare field such as nurse, dietician, athletic trainer, social worker and more and would like to go to a Healthcare Career Fair.   Seats are limited for this Career Fair which will be Feb. 29th and students interested must have a GPA of at least a 2.5 to attend. The cost is $10 and must be paid at time of registration; extra money will be needed for lunch.

COLLEGE-BOUND SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS:  The Counseling Department will be conducting a field trip to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on Thursday, March 15 from 7:45 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This will be a full day trip that will give you an opportunity to visit a large campus.  To be eligible for the field trip, you must be in college-bound coursework and have at least a 2.50 GPA.  The cost of the field trip is $10.00 for lunch, which is due at the time of sign-up.  A maximum of 30 students will be taken.  If interested, field trip permission forms are available in the counseling office.  The deadline for returning signed field trip permission forms is TUESDAY, MARCH 6.
Students in Advance Placement Classes: any student taking the AP Exams in May must register in the counselor’s office by Friday, March 9th.  Total cost for each exam is $79.  A non-refundable deposit of $15 is due at registration.  See Mrs. Smith or Ms. Roffman in the counselor’s office for details.
Summer Employment Opportunities with the Pekin Park District are now posted in the Guidance Office.
Seniors - ICC will be here on Thursday, March 15th at 8am to administer the Compass Placement test.  Space is limited so….please sign-up in the counseling office soon.
 Class of 2012 - do you remember watching Rugrats, learning your ABCs, or when your biggest worry was falling off the monkey bars? Grab a baby ad form in the principal's office and share those memories. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns please see Mr. Steger.

Hey fellow procrastinators of Pekin High! Do you still want your 2011-2012 year book? Well, you're in luck. Now until Friday March 23rd you can order a Pekinian and a black metal nameplate for only $35. See Mr. Steger in A115 if you have already ordered your yearbook or have any additional questions.
Intramural Basketball is coming soon.  Games are set to begin on in Mid-March.  To play, you need to get a team together and sign up.  Any boy or girl who did not play basketball for PCHS this winter may play.  Cost is $10 per person.  Teams must have at least 5 players.  Registration forms are available in Mr. Neville’s room:  C-305.  Games will be played on Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Thursdays evenings through the end of April in Hawkins Gym.  Sign up deadline is Wednesday, March 7.  In you have any questions, please see Mr. Neville is C-305.
Tomorrow, Feb. 22 is School Improvement Day # 12.  School begins @ 10 AM; doors will open @ 9:30 AM.

SCHOLARSHIP NEWS

FRED S. BAILEY SCHOLARSHIP - These $3,000 scholarships are available to seniors who plan to attend the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Students should have a commitment to service, community involvement, leadership, and action. Additional information about the scholarship requirements and criteria for selection can be found on www.universityymca.org/bailey. Deadline to apply is Feb. 28, 2012.

EASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY has several scholarships available for students majoring in Career and Technical Education or who plan to major in Applies Engineering and Technology.  Scholarships can be found at http://www.eiu.edu/tech/prospective scholarships awards students.php

GREATER PEORIA AREA CRIME STOPPERS SCHOLARSHIP - Crime Stoppers will be awarding up to six $1,000 scholarships to Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford County Illinois students pursuing higher education in the 2012-2013 school year. Applicants must have a major or minor in Law Enforcement or Public Administration and a minimum average of a C. Interested student must complete a 500 word essay on "Safety in Our Schools" and have three recommendations. Applications are available in the counselors’ office or can be found online at www.peoriaareacrimestoppers.com. Deadline to apply is Feb. 29, 2012.

BUICK ACHIEVERS SCHOLARSHIP - Over 1,000 scholarships will be awarded to qualifying students so apply now! Students must be a graduating senior planning to enroll in an accredited 4 Year University or college. Students must also plan to major in a field that focuses on engineering, technology, design or business, with an interest in the automotive industry. These scholarships will be given to students who achieve in and out of the classroom and who may not be able to go to college without financial assistance.  ILLINOIS ODD FELLOW – REBEKAH SCHOLARSHIP – This scholarship is given to students based on financial need and scholastic ability.  Students must write a statement 150 words or less setting forth his/her vocational or professional goal.  Stop by the Counselor’s office to pick up an application or visit http://www.ioof-il.org/index.php?option=com content&task=blogcategory&id=24&Itemid=49 to apply online. Deadline to apply is March 1, 2012.

NATIONAL DEFENSE TRANSPORTATION ASSOC. SCHOLARSHIP – Six scholarships will be available to students who are high school seniors graduating in the spring of 2012 or full-time college students.  When applying students must include a copy of their transcript and ACT scores, two letters of recommendation and an essay that tells how your chosen field of study will contribute to the fields of transportation and logistics.  Deadline to apply is March 1, 2012.  Applications can be picked up in the counselors’ office or can be downloaded online at www.ndtascottstlouis.org
NORTH PEKIN MARQUETTE HEIGHTS SCHOOL DISTRICT #102 ENHANCE THE FUTURE AND DORTHY OHLMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS - These $500 scholarships are available to graduating 2012 seniors who have attended Marquette Heights grade schools for at least 6 years and are accepted into an accredited college, university or trade school. Applications are available in the counselors’ office and the deadline to apply is March 6, 2012.
ILLINOIS DIVISION OF SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS SCHOLARSHIPS - This $1,000 scholarship is available to graduating seniors who will attend a community college or university in Illinois. Student must be a descendant of a male who served honorably in the army, navy, judicial, executive, or civil service. Students must submit a 500 word essay by March 15, 2012. Pick up an application for more information.
SOCIETY OF AMERIAN MILITARY ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIP- These $1,000 scholarships are available to graduating seniors who have at least a 3.2 GPA and who plan on majoring in engineering or science. Students can apply online at posts.same.org/rockisland/camps.htm or pick up an application in the counselors office. Deadline to apply is March 16, 2012.
GRAND VIEW CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN BUSINESS WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP - This scholarship is available to students who are a resident of Tazewell or Peoria counties, be a recent high school graduate, have a GED certificate or have maintained a 3.0 GPA if currently attending college or be a current high school senior. To apply for the scholarship pick up an application at the counselor's office. Students must also submit their transcript, three letters of recommendation and a written statement of who you are and why you are requesting financial assistance. Applications are due to March 23, 2012.
ILLINOIS ASSOCIATION OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION SPECIAL NEEDS PERSONNEL SCHOLARSHIPS (ILAVESNP) - These local scholarships will be awarded to students identified a special needs/special populations who are pursuing education for a career in a vocational/technical area. Applications are available in the counselor's office. Deadline to apply is March 30th.
US BANK INTERENT SCHOLARSHIP – Any senior planning to enroll next fall at an eligible 4 year college or university participating in the U.S. Bank No Fee Education Loan Program are eligible to apply for a $1,000 scholarship.  Deadline to apply is March 31, 2012.  Apply online at www.usbank.com/scholarship.

BOB QUARELLO SCHOLARSHIP - This $500 scholarship is available to students who reside in Fulton, Mason, Peoria or Tazewell County planning to enroll in a law enforcement or related professional curriculum. Students must apply online at www.bobquarelloscholarship.com. Deadline to apply is April 1, 2012.

ILLINOIS AMVETS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Two $500 scholarships are available to seniors who are a child or grandchild of a Veteran in Tazewell County. Application must be postmarked by April 1st. Stop by the counselor's office to pick up an application today. Each scholarship has a separate application.

CENTRAL ILLINOIS SECTION SCHOLARSHIP - This $1,000 scholarship is available to any high school senior interested in any area of tribology. Pick up an informational sheet on the essay requirements in the counselors office. Deadline to apply is April 1, 2012.

The Robert B. Monge Golf Scholarship – The Robert B. Monge Golf Scholarship is awarded annually at the Robert B. Monge Best Ball Invitational Golf Tournament to a graduate of Pekin Community High School.  The $1500 scholarship is based on need, extra-curricular activities in school, community, church and overall academic achievement.  The applicant need not have played high school golf.  However, there should be some kind of connection to the game; such as participation in junior golf, a recreational interest in the game, or parents/grandparents who play golf.  The scholarship application is due back to the Counselors Office on or before Friday, April 20, 2012

CENTRAL ILLINOIS SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP - Two $500 scholarships are available to graduating seniors who will be attending an accredited junior college, college or university in the fall. Students must have participated in softball at the high school level. Applications are available in the counselors’ office and the deadline to apply is May 1, 2012.

RIVER CUP FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP - These scholarships are awarded to students with an association with golf who are good students and who have been active in their school and/or community.  The Foundation’s preference is that applications be made online at www.rivercup.com.  Deadline to apply is May 15, 2012.

VANCOUVER RESTAURANT SCHOLARSHIP – This $500 scholarship is available to students between the ages of 15-21 and who is a full time student in 2012.  Student must answer the following essay question in 500 words or less “The cost of post- secondary education has been increasing for a number of years.  What do you think are the three main causes of this increase?”  Deadline to apply is May 30, 2012/ to apply online visit http://www.cafeilnido.net/vancouverrestaurants.html

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES SCHOLARSHIP – This $5,000 scholarship is available to seniors or first year college students.  Students must answer 2 essay questions in under 1000 words, “Why is a healthy lifestyle important in school?” and in under 500 words, describe your career plans, goals and personal ambitions.  Deadline to apply is May 30, 2012.  To apply online visit http://www.fitnessexercises.tv/scholarships.php 

BIG DIG SCHOLARSHIP – This $3,000 scholarship is available to students in Grade 12 or entering into their first year of college.  Students must submit an essay this is under 1000 words by the stated deadline.  Deadline to apply is June 1, 2012.  To apply online visit http://www.antiquetrader.tv/studentscholarship.php

BIG SUN SCHOLARSHIP – This $500 scholarship is available to seniors who are student athletes.  Students must submit an essay answering “How has your education contributed to who you are today?  Why do you want to earn a college education?”  All essays should be submitted to athleticawards@big sunathletics.com.  For more information please visit www.bigsunathletics.com Deadline to apply is June 22, 2012.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY AT CARBONDALE SCHOLARSHIP – Students attending SIUC from Tazewell County are eligible to apply for the Peoria Tri County Alumni Chapter Scholarship.  For more information visit http://scholarships.siuc.edu/.

UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI SCHOLARSHIP – Attention Business major students!! University of Missouri has several scholarships available to incoming freshman who major in business.  You could receive up to $9,500 each year for four years.  For more info visit www.business.missouri,edu/scholarships

ALTRUSA CLUB REINHARD/LEIFHEIT SCHOLARSHIP – This $500 local scholarship is for a graduating senior who will be a full-time student in an approved college or vocational school.  Applications are available in the counselors’ office and the deadline to apply is March 30, 2012.

ESSAY CONTEST – This $500 essay contest is open to all high school seniors with a parent or guardian belonging to an Illinois Moose Association Lodge or Chapter.  The student must submit a 500 word essay on “Traffic Safety-Driving Privileges Required Driving Responsibly”.  The essay along with the entry form must be postmarked by June 30, 2012.  Forms are available in the Pekin Moose Lodge.

TIMM TERRY SOLDWEDEL SCHOLARSHIP – This scholarship is available to a senior who will be doing one of the following: obtaining a four-year bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Sciences, obtaining a four-year bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts/Sciences, obtaining a four-year bachelor’s degree in nay major at Bradley University or obtaining a four-year bachelor’s degree in any major at Brown University.  Applications are available in the counselors’ office and are due March 30, 2012.

JANET E. EIMER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – This local scholarship is available to a senior who intends to seek a degree in elementary education.  Applications are available in the counselors’ office and are due March 30, 2012.

DALE AND NORMA SUTTON SCHOLARSHIP – This local scholarship is available to an exemplary senior who has an aptitude for grammar and writing skills.  Applications are available in the Counselors’ Office and are due March 30, 2012.

FRANK B. “POP” STOWE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – This scholarship is available to any senior who intends to further his or her vocational education studies.  Applications are available in the Counselors’ Office and are due March 30, 2012.

LT. COL. RONALD J. ZIEBOLD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving graduate of PCHS who is interested in pursuing a military career.   Applications are available in the counselors’ office and are due March 30, 2012.

FRIENDS SCHOLARSHIP – This scholarship will be awarded to a senior in financial need who will be attending a University next year.   Applications are available in the counselors’ office and are due March 30, 2012.

PEKIN HIGH SCHOOL/UIUC SCHOLARSHIP FUN (NEWMANN) – This fund will provide merit based scholarships to graduates of PCHS who are incoming freshman students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or who are transfer students to UIUC from non-four year degree granting institutions.  Need may be considered as an additional factor in selecting the students to receive the scholarship.  The scholarship may be received for up to four years, as long as satisfactory progress toward degree is made.  NO STUDENT WHO HAS BEEN A VALEDICTORIAN AT PCHS OR HAS RECEIVED SCHOLARASHIP ASSISTANCE THROUGH ANY OTHER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM ASSICIATED WITH PEKIN HIGH SHALL BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP.  Applications are available in the counselor’s office.  DEADLINE: MARCH 16, 2012.
