| Katie H. is shown answering an interview question in HOI, after studying Employability all week. | All HOI classes were visited by the United States Army. Jeffrey J. Nasser SFC, and a representative of the Medical Corp, were here to answer many student questions, giving examples from a variety of situations encountered locally and in the field, as a member of the U.S. Army. | During the fall semester, all HOI classes were visited by speaker Greg Eberle of PROeX Sports Medicine, during our emergency care unit. He taught each class what to do when coming upon an unconscious person, how to turn them correctly, and how to safely get them the help they need. |
Health Occupations II students practicing their skills in skits they designed to show how much they have learned! |
They prove that they have learned how to encourage patients, care for them, and adapt to many different kinds of patients, personalities, and diagnoses. Great job! |
The students will be prepared to take their state license exam for certified nursing assistants in June, and be listed on the IL State Registry for CNA's. |

The Health Occupations II students have completed the Alzheimer's Disease unit, required by the Illinois Department of Public Health. They learned that Alzheimer's Disease is a growing problem in the United States and the world. They have practiced many techniques of communication and activities that are therapeutic for each patient; have learned the various stages and changes the patient and the family goes through over a potential 20-year period; and learned that the Alzheimer's Association of Illinois is an outstanding resource of love, caring, and knowledge that can be called upon to understand this problem. |
Health Occupations I enjoyed a unit on Employability this spring, and ended the unit with professional interviews, wearing their best interview outfits for the day, to complete the learning experience!

Mrs. Roggy's Health Occupations classes all enjoyed having speaker Lori Utter from the Pekin Hospital, Director of Therapy Services, come and demonstrate various devices used by the hospital therapy services. The students were enthusiastic about joining in and trying to use: crutches, canes, walkers, thera-putty, exercise rubber bands, etc. A favorite task involved thickening fluids to the correct consistency for a stroke patient to drink. Ms. Utter and the students thickened fluids to nectar thick, honey thick, and pureed! Some were brave enough to try drinking water and various juices.
Thanks to Ms. Utter for being a great and interactive speaker!

All of Mrs. Roggy's Health Occupations I and II classes are learning about the Diabetes Mellitus epidemic that is growing annually in the United States of America. They have learned the first three classic signs of diabetes, the differences between Type I and Type II, and risk factors. Each student had the opportunity to learn about blood glucose testings, and using an blood glucose testing machine. If they chose to, some students even tried the acu-check teaching machine available in the classroom. They learned to wash and dry their hands thoroughly, clean the finger to be tested additionally with an alcohol swab, and how to carefully dispose of the testing items in an official 'sharps container', similar to those found in a hospital. Every student learned much about this growing U.S.A. problem, and how it pertains to many patients today. Great job, everyone!
