ISAC (Illinois Student Assistance commission) reports that in any academic year, the funding for the Monetary Award Program (MAP grant) is “likely to be depleted before all eligible applicants can be awarded.”  In other words, grant money that is available for the State, will run out and it is awarded on a “first-come, first-serve” basis.  The application became available on October 1, and all seniors who plan to attend any type of school next year are strongly encouraged to submit their applications NOW.  The application is also the pathway for student loans, and it will be required for many types of scholarships.

Film Club will be watching the academy-award winning film The Artist on Friday February 10th in Mr. Ruehrdanz’s room, G111. Bring a friend!

For those interested in trying out for the boys varsity or JV tennis teams:


Open gym time has been reserved at Parkside Athletics indoor tennis courts beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 7, and running through Sunday, February 26, on every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday after school from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., and on Sundays from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.


There is no charge for 5-star members of Parkside; there is a $10 charge for the two hours for any non-member.   Bring your rackets; tennis balls will be provided.  When you arrive at Parkside you must sign-in at the front desk before going on the courts.  You must do this every time you plan to attend workouts.


Tennis try-outs begin on Monday, Feb. 27 after school at Parkside – rain or shine.

There has been an interest survey emailed to all students who were able to attend the mandatory parent meeting for the Early College Program.  Students need to open a quick survey and respond with which courses they are interested in taking at ICC next year.   The deadline for this survey is Friday, February 3.

Attention Juniors!

If you took the PSAT last semester on October 19th, the Counseling Department will be holding an optional meeting going over your test results. Test results and booklets will be distributed during the meeting. We will also help you interpret your test scores and how to prepare for the upcoming SAT. The meeting will be Thursday, February 2nd during your advisory period. We hope to see you there!


Anime Club will meet Friday after school until 3:45 in Miss Smith’s room, G403. We will be watching Hal’s Moving Castle.

Attention seniors if you forgot to preorder your senior class t-shirt ($6.00) or sweatshirt (crew $12.00 or hooded for $18.00) last week here is your opportunity to order yours this week.  Last chance! So get your order in during your lunch periods from Tuesday thru Friday in front of the counselor’s office or see Ms. DeLaere (G106).

Stop by the Student Council booth to pick up your application for Dragon Spotlight!  The show is Thursday, February 16th and STUCO is looking for great student talent to perform and be emcees!!  The applications will be available today! The applications are due to Miss Kahl in G203 on February 2nd.

The Girl Up Club will be selling pre-orders of buttons and t-shirts during all lunches this Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  Buttons are $1 each and t-shirts are $12 each.  Stop by the booth and pre-order yours to help girls get better education in the developing world!

Attention Seniors!  The time to turn in your baby ad form is quickly coming to an end!  Baby ad forms are due with payment to Mrs. A. Smith in room A115 by February 15th.  Space is limited, and baby ads are accepted on a first come, first served basis!  Questions?  Email asmith@pekinhigh.net or stop by A115.

Any student taking the AP Exams in May must register at the BFO by Friday, March 3rd.  The total cost of each exam is 84 dollars.  A non-refundable deposit of 15 dollars is due at registration.

Attention Juniors:  ICC is offering SAT review course at PCHS in preparation for the SAT.  The course place for five weeks beginning on February 6th and ending March 13th.  The registration information have been mailed home to all junior families.  Limited seats are available and are first-come-first-served.  Additional packets are available in the counseling office as well as scholarship information. 


The Illinois AMVETS Service Foundation has 20 scholarships available through their website www.ilamvets.org. Additional scholarships offered from their subsidiaries, Illinois AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary and Illinois AMVETS Sad Sacks can also be found on their website. Preference is given to military families.  Applications must be a 2017 high school graduate.  Scholarship criteria and applications can be found on www.ilamvets.org

America’s Farmers Grow AG Leaders, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, gives students the opportunity to earn a $1,500 scholarship in an ag-related field of study, with more than a half-million dollars in scholarships available.  Students must apply November 15, 2016-February 1, 2017 at FFA.org/scholarships.

Illinois Wesleyan University, Illinois State University, and Bradley University ROTC programs offer high school scholarships for their college level programs.  For more information visit the PCHS Counseling Department website.

The Ziebold Family Trust has established a scholarship in memory of 1957 PCHS graduate Lt. Col. Ronald J. Ziebold, USAF. The Ziebold Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving graduate of PCHS who is interested in pursuing a military career. Applications are available in the counseling office and must be submitted by March 17, 2017.


The Janet E. Eimer Memorial Scholarship annually awards a scholarship to a deserving graduate of PCHS who intends to seek a degree in elementary education studies. Applications are available in the counseling office and must be submitted by March 17, 2017.


The Dorothy Mae Lohnes Educational Trust has established a scholarship in memory of Pekin Grade School District 108 primary teacher Dorothy Mae Lohnes. The Lohnes Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to twelve (12) deserving graduates of PCHS who wish to further their education at a post-secondary institution. The recipients of this scholarship must demonstrate both financial need and strong potential for future success in their educational program of study. Each recipient will receive a $2,000 award to be used to further their education. Applications are available in the counseling office and must be submitted by March 17, 2017.


The Timm Terry Soldwedel Scholarship is available to a senior who will be doing one of the following: obtaining a four-year bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Sciences, obtaining a four-year bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts/Sciences, obtaining a four-year bachelor’s degree in any major at Bradley University, or obtaining a four-year bachelor’s degree in any major at Brown University. Applications are available in the counseling office and must be submitted by March, 17, 2017.


The Frank B. “Pop” Stowe Memorial Scholarship annually awards a scholarship to a deserving graduate of PCHS who intends to further his or her vocational education studies. Applications are available in the counseling office and must be submitted by March 17, 2017.


The Lighthouse Guild offers an annual scholarship program for college-bound high school and graduate students who are legally blind.  The program will award approximately 20 college-bound scholarships of up to $10,000 each and one graduate scholarship of up to $10,000.  Apply online at lighthouseguild.org/scholarships or visit scholars@lighthouseguild.org. Application deadline March 31, 2017.


UnityPoint Health – Methodist/Proctor Foundation awards one $1,500 per academic year scholarship ($750 per semester) applied to tuition or lab fees for one graduate of PCHS, Litchfield High School, or Midwest Central High School.  The applicant must be accepted for admission to an accredited College of Pharmacy or must be currently enrolled in an accredited College of Pharmacy.  Applications are available in the Counseling office and must be submitted by April 14, 2017


The Illinois Odd Fellow-Rebekah Scholarship is offered to students from the state of Illinois who wish to attend any post-secondary school or an accredited vocational or technical training school and who have maintained at least a “C” grade average may make application for a scholarship.  The application is available online at www.ioof-il.org under “Forms” or in the counseling office.   Applications must be received by March 1, 2017.


1st Farm Credit Services offers the 2017 First Choice Agriculture Scholarship.  The $1,500 scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior who is pursuing an education in a career field that is agriculture-related or a field that will contribute to the quality of rural life.  There are 24 available scholarships.  Applications can be downloaded from www.1stfarmcredit.com or picked up from the counseling office.  Application deadline is February 15, 2017.


The Illinois PTA offer scholarships for two graduating high school seniors interested in pursuing a degree in education or an education-related degree program.  The students must reside in and be attending Illinois public high schools.  The awards are $3,000 and $2,000.  The application can be found at www.illinoispta.org/scholarshipapplication.html.  Applications must be submitted by February 15, 2017.


The Secretariat offers one $500 scholarship in honor of Kathryn G. Hansen.

For the 2017-2018 academic year, one scholarship in the amount of $500 will be awarded. The scholarship is to be used for tuition, fees, books, or other related educational expenses. To be eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:
· be enrolled full time as a high school senior in the 2017-2018 academic year in Illinois, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no later than the fall following graduation;
· have a strong commitment to pursue a higher education in an office professional, secretarial, or business-related field within the State of Illinois with preference given to attendance at the University of Illinois;
· involvement in co-curricular and community activities;
· demonstrate academic achievement;
· be a resident of Illinois;
· be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

The application materials can be sent by e-mail to thesecretariat@illinois.edu (preferred method) or U.S. mail. The postmark and email deadline for receipt of application materials is Monday, March 6, 2017.
The recipient will be asked to attend a presentation at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign campus to receive a certificate. A recipient unable to attend the presentation must contact the committee. If a recipient makes no direct contact with the committee once they have been notified, the scholarship is forfeited.

Kathryn G Hansen Scholarship 2017-2018 Application Form INSTRUCTIONS

The American Association of University Women’s (AAUW) mission is to empower women and girls towards lives of purpose and passion. The Pekin Chapter of AAUW awards annually a $1,000 scholarship to a PCHS senior girl who has the high probability of success in college and who has financial need. Applications are available in the Counseling office and must be submitted by March 17, 2017.

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Scholarship

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has a $1,000 scholarship to offer a high school senior.  This individual does not need to be affiliated with anyone through the DAR.  The student has to attend a junior college, 4-year college, or university located in Illinois.  This scholarship is primarily based on financial need.  Applications must be submitted by 3:00 January 27 to the counseling office.


Dean Ritter Trust for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The Dean Ritter Trust will be awarding scholarship varying in amounts between $1,000 and $8,000 each for graduating seniors who are hearing impaired and intend on enrolling in an accredited university or technical school for the 2017-2018 school year. Applicants should have a significant hearing loss in one or both ears as well as financial need. Visit http://www.deanritter.org/2017-scholarship/ for applications. River Cup Foundation

The River Cup Foundation will award an undetermined number of scholarships to graduating seniors who have an involvement in the game of golf.  Applications should be good students and be active in their school and/or in the community.  Additional information and the scholarship application are available on the Foundation’s website at www.rivercup.com.  Applications must be submitted by May 15, 2017.  Electronic submission is preferred.
Beta Sigma Psi Educational Foundation

The Beta Sigma Psi Educational Foundation is offering several scholarships to graduating senior males who are members of a Lutheran congregation who plan to attend University of Illinois, Indiana University, or Purdue University.  Applications are available at http://scholarships.betasigmapsi.org.  Applications are due February 17, 2017.
Myers & Steiner Memorial Scholarship

The Myers & Steiner Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of 2005 PCHS graduates Kyle Myers and Joseph (Joey) Steiner.  The Myers & Steiner Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a one (1) deserving graduate of PCHS who wishes to further their education at a post-secondary institution (including universities, colleges, community colleges and trade schools).  The recipient of this scholarship must demonstrate a strong potential for future success in their chosen educational program of study.  The recipient will receive a $1,000.00 one-time award to be used to further their education. *Amount of award is subject to change due to funds available.  Applications are available in the Counseling office and must be submitted by 3:00 P.M.  April 7, 2017.

PEKIN COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL- Local Scholarships 2017

 Amounts awarded will be determined each year.  In some cases the number of awards may vary.

 Jack Marzolf Scholarship:  Awarded to an outstanding senior with probability of success in college.  Financial need may be taken into consideration but is of secondary importance.

 John T. McNaughton: Awarded to a senior who plans to enter the field of international or government affairs.

 Pekin Community High School Awards:  Several awards to be given to students on the basis of financial need and likelihood of successfully completing their respective educational program.  More than one scholarship will be awarded.

PCHS Class of 1965 Scholarship: Awarded to 4 PCHS graduating seniors attending ICC after graduation.  Each recipient will receive $250.

 F.M. Peterson Scholarship:  One scholarship awarded to a deserving student who plans to further his/her education in the teaching profession.

 Mary Stowe Scholarship: Awarded to a graduating senior who plans to acquire a degree in high school counseling.

 J. Edgar Wolfer Scholarship: Awarded to a graduating senior selected on the basis of financial need and academic promise. Special consideration will be given to students planning to major in mathematics or chemistry.

 Norma I. Yock Music Scholarship:  To be awarded to a graduating senior who has participated in the high school music department and intends to pursue music participation in college.  Must have a good academic record and show ability to complete a college education.  Talent is a major consideration.  The scholarship may be awarded to one senior or divided between two qualifying students.  Selection is made by the music department.

The Robert B. Monge Golf Scholarship is awarded annually at the the Robert B. Monge Best Ball Invitational Golf Tournament to a graduate of PCHS.  The $1,500 scholarship is based on need, extra-curricular activities in school, community, church and overall academic achievement.  The applicant need not have played high school golf.  However, there should be some kind of connection to the game; such as participation in junior golf, a recreational interest in the game, or parents/grandparents who play golf. Applications are available in the Counselors’ Office.   The scholarship application is due back to the Counselors’ office on or before Friday, April 7, 2017.


This $500 local scholarship opportunity is available to PCHS graduating seniors who have attended North Pekin Marquette Heights Grade Schools for at least 6 years and are accepted at an accredited college, university, or trade school.  Applications are available in the counseling office.  Deadline to apply is March 3, 2017 by noon to the Counseling Office.

The PCHS/UIUC Scholarship Fund will provide merit-based scholarships to PCHS graduates who will be incoming freshman students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or who are transfer students to UIUC from non-four year degree granting institutions.  Need may be considered in the selection of recipients.  No PCHS valedictorian or recipient of an associated scholarship from PCHS will be considered.  Applications are available in the Counseling Office.  Deadline to apply is April 6, 2017.



The Pekin Woman’s Club awards a $500 scholarship to a PCHS senior who is continuing his/her education in a two-year or four-year college.  Applications are available in the Counseling Office.  Deadline to apply is March 15, 2017.
